Getting Oriented with Resources to Succeed in Online Learning:
1.
Share the following important resources with students for setting
higher expectations and learn how to navigate LMS (Canvas/Moodle) tools.
Student Resources has already been added globally to the Course site, so every
class created will automatically have that linked in the navigation list on the
left.

Best Practices of Communications Strategies to Apply First Day/Each
Week of the Semester:
1.
The best practice is to create a short 3 to 4 minutes welcome video to
introduce yourself to build a humanizing relationship. You may use Canvas
Studio video tool/ YouTube/any other tool you prefer to use.
2.
Set up a discussion board (watch the video how to create a discussion
board in Canvas) for students to introduce themselves to create a student peer
community with the following guiding questions.
I.
What is your name and background?
II.
What is your major/program of study?
III.
What is your expectation from this course and your instructor?
IV.
What is your commitment to successfully complete this course?
V.
Do you have a computer, internet, and other resources to succeed in
this class?
VI.
Consider creating a Syllabus Quiz to ensure they read the syllabus to
minimize managing student conflicts. Here is how you can Create a Quiz/Test in
Canvas
3.
Plan to send Announcements on every Monday with a to-do list of
reading, assignment, discussion post, and on every Friday to remind them of the
deadlines.
4.
Consider using Canvas Inbox instead of Outlook email to communicate
with students. Imagine you are teaching 3 to 4 courses totaling 50-100 students
and communicating with them throughout the semester. It will be hard to
organize and manage all communications in outlook emails. If you do not wish to
manage two emails, set up your Canvas profile so that you can use Canvas to
send your emails and receive them in your Outlook Inbox. You can also reply to a Canvas email from
your Outlook Inbox, and it will be sent back through Canvas.
d.
Using Strategies to Engage Students throughout the semester to increase
persistence and retention:
1.
Use strategies from the attached articles to create Instructor
Presence, Social Presence and Cognitive Presence in Online learning
2.
Create an
Inclusive Online Class
3.
Use a Discussion Forum for General/Module wise Questions and Answers.
You may create a discussion forum for Q&A and ask students to post their
questions in this forum rather than emailing you. Answering in this forum will
help you to reduce email responses for a question that may be asked by more
than one student. Or, you may answer a question asked by a student which would
be beneficial for the whole class to know.
